How to Bid on the Building 215 Cleanroom RFI for NIST
What NIST is asking about
NIST is conducting market research on repairs and modernization for the Building 215 Advanced Measurement Laboratory cleanroom in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The work may include replacing about 1,200 HEPA filters, 70 VAV terminal units and 54 airflow monitors, plus installing 32 exhaust control valves and related ductwork, controls, testing and cleanroom certification.
This is an RFI, not a contract solicitation. NIST wants industry feedback to help assess the project’s scope, schedule, phasing, cleanroom outages, risks and estimated construction cost. Responses are for planning, and NIST will not award a contract based on them.
Key dates and the deadline
RFI responses are due November 2, 2026, at 2:00 PM ET. The description notes that the response deadline was extended to November 2.
An optional site visit is scheduled for October 9, 2026, at 9:00 AM at the Building 215 lobby. Requests for visitor badges are due October 7, 2026. The visit is not required to respond.
Who this opportunity may suit
This RFI may be useful to firms with experience in cleanroom construction or modernization, HEPA filtration, HVAC systems, controls, testing and balancing, or cleanroom certification. Firms able to comment on phasing work around sensitive research equipment may also have relevant practical input.
Because this is market research, the purpose is to share informed feedback, not to submit a price or compete for an award.

Visitors must be preregistered and bring photo identification and vehicle registration information.
Preparing useful RFI feedback
Focus your response on the areas NIST is researching: scope, schedule, work phasing, cleanroom outage needs, technical and performance risks, constructability, competition and cost certainty. Explain why a concern matters and suggest a practical change where you can.
Use relevant project experience or operational examples to support your comments, while keeping the response clear and specific. Mark any proprietary, confidential or commercially sensitive information, and avoid including it unless needed to make a meaningful response.
